Healthy Dental Habits to Follow

dentist McKinneyMaintaining good dental health is very important. Daily oral care, visits to the dentist, diet, and lifestyle habits all impact your appearance and health. You’re in control to make the adjustments needed for optimum dental and overall good health.

The Importance of a Healthy Diet

Research has proven there is a direct correlation between oral and overall health. The things we eat and drink impact more than the waistline. The sugars and carbs we eat leave behind a sticky substance that can harden on teeth. Plaque and tartar can lead to dental decay and gum disease.

A proper daily diet includes fruits, vegetables, dairy, proteins, and healthy grains. You don’t see soda, cookies, crackers, or chips in that list … those types of foods should not be considered daily fare.

One of the most important things you can do is drink water. This is the healthiest beverage by far. It can be flavored to suit your taste … adding fruit makes a refreshing change. Coffee and tea consumption are on the approved list, but remember they do have teeth staining capability and you should take caffeine into consideration.

Oral Health Habits to Follow

Brush your teeth at least twice a day for two minutes each time. Use a fluoridated toothpaste or gel and make sure you are using a soft bristle toothbrush. Hard bristles and a heavy hand can lead to premature gum erosion.

Floss teeth daily. While brushing is important, the area between teeth can only be cleaned by flossing allowing food debris to be removed.

Do not use tobacco in any form. It is a proven fact that people who smoke are considerably more likely to develop gum disease. Periodontal disease can lead to tooth loss.

Do not bite your nails or use your teeth to open packages. Both of these actions can damage enamel and/or result in chipped or broken teeth.

Finally, make sure you visit our team at Thompson Dental every six months for teeth cleaning and dental exam. Maintaining good oral health will help you look your best and provide a boost to your overall health.
